Away match at Ashby 4 September

 

David, Mark and Paul travelled to Ashby for the final league match.  With only second place to play for it was the hosts who came out on  top with a comfortable 10-2 victory.

 

League Match Home to Bakewell

 

 

The final home Match saw David, Paul and Richard take on Bakewell on a very hot day.  Leicester won the match fairly comfortably 8 to 4 with debutant Paul winning all his matches.  Well done Paul.

 

Inter-counties Championship GC (Posted 22/8/19)

Leicestershire were represented by David, Mark & Alison from Leicester and Martin Wroughton from Ashby at the intercounties last weekend down at Southwick.Twelve counties took part with many teams including players who took part in the World Championships last month. With six games taking place on Saturday and five on Sunday it was a full weekend of croquet. Leicestershire  only managed to win 2 matches (but 9 games) which meant we came second bottom and unfortunately are relegated to the second division next year.

 

 

August Fun Day - Flamingo & Hedgehog Cup (posted 11/8/19)

​21 people turned out for the fun day which was combined with the club doubles tournament the "flamingo & hedgehog cup" run by Alison & Mark. We managed to dodge the showers and it was a close run event with David & Sue, Christine & Martyn and Ron & John Sharpe all neck & neck.  Ron & John were the winner with 26 hoops, Christine & Martyn second on 23 and David & Sue 3rd. Tea to end the day with a hedgehog cake before the heavens opened.

 

Long Eaton v Leicester League Match (posted 9/8/19)

Richard, Mark & Alison traveled to Long Eaton on the 4th August for their league match.  They met a very strong Long Eaton team ( their total handicaps came to just 4!) and the result was a convincing win by Long Eaton 11:1. Well done Richard for managing to secure a game for Leicester.

 

League Match - Leicester v Sheffield U3A (posted 27/7/19)

This was a tighter match than the scores show as several games went to tie break. We have now won all 3 of our league matches. Leicester won 8-4.

 

July Fun Day 

Thank you to Len & Sue for hosting the event which was played as singles due to a low turn out (12) . Well done to Leena for winning the most hoops 

 

Nottingham B level Tournament (posted 10 July 2019)

Alison & Mark traveled to Nottingham for this their B Level Tournament (getting lost along the way). It was a day of all seasons and as it happens all results. Alison seemed to like long games resulting in tie breakers which she lost! Mark faired better winning all of his games to win his group & qualifying for the semifinals. Mark beat Roger L'Anson to then played Andrea Huxley beating her (7-2) to win the Nottingham B Level & gaining entry to the B Level final (for all winners) in September .Well done Mark  (photo in the gallery)

 

Hunstanton B Level Tournament (post 1st  July 2019)

On an exceedingly hot day (31 degrees) Mark & Alison took part in the Hunstanton B Level GC tournament. It was a 3 block competition with Alison & Mark drawn in the same group.  Despite Mark beating Alison in their match Alison went on to win the block and qualify for the semi finals. Alison lost to Mike Bilton 7-4 but beat John Reddish 7-5 for 3rd place & ended the day VERY HOT.

 

League Match v Woodhall Spa (25 May 2019)

Richard, Mark and Alison played the 2nd match of the season at home on a lovely sunny day. They won the match 9 to 3 with Richard winning all 5 of his matches.

 

Bass Shield Tournament ( posted 20 May 2019)

Alison, David and Mark travelled to Ashby on Saturday morning and were paired against Bakewell and Darley Dale in their group.  With 9 wins from 12 matches they qualified for the final. They met the hosts Ashby and were well beaten.

 

League Match at Pinchbeck ( posted 8th May 2019

First match of the season saw Alison, David and Mark travel to Pinchbeck. Match started well with wins in opening 4 games. Leicester then lost the next two but went on to finish with a 9-3 victory.  Weather was kinder than expected.

 

Watford B level (posted 8 May 2019)

Alison and Mark took part in a B level on bank holiday Monday.  It was an early start on a cold day.  Alison started well with 2 wins but went downhill from there whilst Mark lost his first 3 but recovered to win remaining games.  

 

Saturday Series 4th May

1st Saturday series of the year with Mark, David, Paul and Alison taking part. A nice but cool day with Mark the eventual winner winning his 3 matches.  Don't forget to sign up for further dates throughout the year.

 

2019 Club Competitions (Posted 26th April)

Remember to enter the internal club competitions as the closing dates are mid May. They are competitions but the main aim is to get everyone involved and have some fun.  As usual there are 3 events - Golf croquet level play, Golf croquet handicap play & also an Association croquet handicap event. Sign up on the club notice board or register your interest with Lawrence if you can't make it down to the club before the closing date.

 

New Season (posted 13 April)

Thank you to Lawrence & David for marking out the lawns for this season and also to Richard, Janet, Katharine, Christine, Len, Mark and the three Ali's for giving the clubhouse a spring clean.

We've Moved (Posted 22 March)

The move from Victoria Park to Monks Rest Gardens is now official, as all our worldly goods are moved between the two venues with the help of Leicester City Council.

 

End of Season (Posted: 2 October)

Members enjoyed a final sunny afternoon of the 2016 season with four rounds of doubles play. Afternoon tea in the clubhouse followed, with club tournament trophies presented to Len, Lawrence, Mark and Alison. The club is now closed until April 2017.

 

GC Match (Posted 30 September 2016)

Leicester A won against Ashby A at home in their FEMCC Division One match. Alison, David & Richard looked like the underdogs on paper with a combined handicap of 8 whilst the Ashby team rolled up with three players with a combined handicap of -1. After three rounds of singles and doubles, Leicester were ahead 4-2, but Ashby pulled back in the fourth round to bring the score back to 5-4. It all came down to the last round and both Alison and David manged to win their games to take the final score to 7-5 and the first time that Leicester has beaten Ashby in the league.

 

Len Sumpter Wins The Pavilion Cup (Posted: 3 September)

Rain eventually stopped play at the club's tournament for novices today, but eight players in their frst two years at the club managed to get three rounds in before the clouds opened. At the end of the first round, it was Gill, James, Len and Sue ahead of the others. Wins for Len and Sue in the second round kept them ahead, but they then had to play each other in the third round and Len clinched the tournament with a 7-2 win. Well done to all who played.

 

David Bell Wins Saturday Series (Posted: 13 August 2016)

Alison, David, Geoff and Mark played in the August Saturday Series golf croquet day tournament. David won two of his games comfortably, but was taken to wire by Geoff who was playing above par all morning and had beaten Alison earlier in the event. Scores: David (7-2, 7-6, 7-1), Mark: (2-7, 7-6, 7-5), Alison (4-7, 6-7, 1-7) and Geoff (7-4, 6-7, 5-7).

 

GC Match (Posted: 7 August 2016)

Leicester A won against Long Eaton A at home in their FEMCC Division One match. Alison, Mark and Richard had a delayed start due to lock problems at the clbhouse. One resolved, Leicester took an early lead and were 4-2 up by the end of the third round and the doubles games. Long Eaton pulled Leicester back to 5-4 in the fifth round of singles, leaving the match to be decided in the last and final round. Mark won his game quickly taking the score to 6-4. Long Eaton won the next taking the score back to 6-5. So Leicester needed Alison to win the last game of the day. With a closely fought game going to 6-6, it was off to the 13th hoop. Following numerous shots and clearances, Alison held her nerve and got her ball in the jaws of the hoop, Long Eaton missed a long jump shot and Alison tapped her ball through for a 7-5 victory for Leicester.

 

GC Match (Posted: 30 July 2016)

Leicester B won against Torksey at home in their FEMCC Division Three match. Geoff, Chris and Josie took a quick lead in the first round and were 4-2 up by the end of the third round of double and singles. Our team put the match beyond Torksey's reach by winning all three games in the fouth round, taking the score up to 7-2. The fifth round was a formality and the macth ended 8-4 to Leicester. This was the last game in the season for Leicester B.

 

GC Match

Leicester B won against North Hykeham B away in their FEMCC Division Three match. Ron, Sue and Geoff went down 0-2 in the first round but recovered to 3-3 by the third. Wins by Ron and Sue took them 5-4 ahead in the fourth round and then wins from Ron and Geoff in the last round nailed it at 7-5. Great result.

 

GC Match (Posted: 9 July 2016)

Leicester A won against Richmond Park away in their FEMCC Division One match. Alison, David and Richard stormed ahead to 5-1 by the end of the third round of doubles and singles. Richmond Park pulled it back to 6-3 in the fourth round, but Leicester held their nerve with two more wins in the last round to deliver a convincing 8-4 win away on a difficult lawn

 

GC Match

Leicester B lost 4-8 against Long Eaton B at home in their FEMCC Division Three match. The match started well and it was 1-1 at round one, but Long Eaton won both games in the second round and all three games in the fourth. So Leicester went into the fifth and final round 2-7 down and even two good wins from John and Geoff could only bring the score back to 4-8

 

National Forest GC Open

David Bell was the runner up in the national Ascot Cup qualifying tournament at Ashby. Following a qualifying day on the Saturday, David beat Tim King (Ashby) 2-0 in the quarter final and JP Moberly (Durham) 2-1 in the semi final. The final against Martin French (Ipswich) was 1-1 and decided on the final game which went to 6-6 and then the golden hoop. 

 

GC Match

Leicester A won 7-5 against Pinchbeck at home in their FEMCC Division One match. After the first three rubbers it was 3-3, but then Leicester pulled ahead in the fourth with strong 7-3 wins by both Mark and Richard. Leicester sealed the match in the fifth with 2 more wins by David and Mark. A convincing win against a very strong visiting team.

 

GC Match

Leicester B lost 5-7 to Branston B at home in their FEMCC Division Three match.

 

Mark Buckley Wins Saturday Series

David, Lawrence, Richard, Mark and Alison played in the June Saturday Series golf croquet day tournament. Mark won all four of his games and was taken to the extra hoop in three of those (7-6, 7-2, 7-6, and 7-6), but held his nerve on each occasion to clinch the event.

Leicester B lost 4-8 to Bakewell B away in their FEMCC Division Three match.

 

Leicester Wins Bass Shield

Our team in the FEMCC golf croquet tournament (David, Mark and Richard) have won the Bass Shield for the fourth consecutive year. In the preliminary round, Leicester won its rubbers convincingly against Darley Dale and Ashby B 3-0, 2-1, 3-0 and 2-1 progressing to the final with ease. The final against Ashby A was a much closer match, but Leicester held their nerve and won by 3.5 - 2.5 games. David also won the Coors Cup for the player with the most wins (6) closely followed by Mark in second place (with 5.5).

 

Car Park Works

The work on the new procession route has started at Victoria Park and there may be restricted access to the pavilion car park. You have to pay to park on the Victoria Park car parks during the day AND in the evening. But it is free parking on Sundays. We have car park permits in the tall cupboard next to the fridge which means you can park for free, but you must put the permit back afterwards.

A warm wellcome to Thirza, John, Diana, Anglea, Gary, Sarah,John, Gill, George, Sue, Maggie, James and Alex who all completed their learn to pay tuition earlier this month
